Autumn Grows 03:06
AUTUMN GROWS Seasons fly along Leaves are hanging on Into the teeth Of a keen Westerly Branches seethe But they don't give way Through the high to the low The autumn grows Storms clouds gathering In November skies Bring rain to to feed the stream It was nearly dry All night long Squalls arrive Winds so strong Branches sigh Through the high to the low There's boughs on the bridge now River's on the rise Raise the sluice downstream They say there's more to come this way Be safe, the autumn grows Grassland dancing wildly in the breeze The gulls have travelled inland From the sea Maybe talking to the trees Of distant memories When the elm trees ruled the ways So stately Now we drink to honour their legacy And remember the good old days As the wood fires burn away To heat the place we stay Storms still gathering Far-off out to sea They'll be with us Later in the week As the autumn grows

Lampers Lane 03:21
LAMPERS LANE There is a place in Lampers Lane Where folks agree to stay the same And soon the autumn rains will bring Them space to breathe Escape indeed All over town People are falling down They drank the poison Saved their souls for gold There was a house on Edward Street Inside the shady ghosts would meet They talked of distant ancestry In tongues would speak of lands to keep It's on the ground Houses have fallen down They took their chances Sold their souls for gold All over town People are falling down They drank the poison Saved their souls for gold Until they're gone People will rise They will be strong They will be wise

SEE YOU ON THE RIVERBANK I'll see you on the riverbank gents I'll see you on the riverbank my friends I'll see you in the valley When the river fines down again I'll see you when the sun will rise I'll see you in the first of the light I'll see you in the third field Sitting underneath the lines And it all comes back on a misty morn in June Picking numbers from a hat At the setting of the Flower Moon And it'll never be the same But I'd do it all again with you I'll see you at the crazy night Yeah I'll see you in the fading light I'll see your friendly faces In the beam of an old torch light And it all comes back on an August Tuesday night When the ghosts with the smiles on their faces Take my side And it'll never be the same But I carry all your names in my mind I'll see you when the storms are due Yeah I'll see you when the floods push through I'll see you in December And remember all the good times with you I'll see you all together When the days down here are through Yeah I'll see you all together When I've handed in my dinner pail too I'll see you on the riverbank my friends

GO GENTLY TO SOLITUDE This valley's a dream A place in my heart and soul Rain clouds above The sun on the ground I walk alone Down to the bridge I go I won't walk across I can't leave this for anything I don't need escape It's already here Nowhere bound I go gently to solitude Found on the mild side Alone with the wildlife I stand here talking to myself These days I'm alive Wrapped up in memories Keeping me warm From the coldness of modern life She'll meet me here then When twilight in shades of grey Descends to illuminate The smiles on our faces Homeward bound We're moving gently To solitude's sound On the edge of the outside Senses alive in the half light Alone we stand beside Won't say goodbye Won't let this die Won't say goodbye And I won't leave your side

TOMORROW HASN'T HAPPENED YET Where there's muck there is brass You're in luck, raise your glass To the Class of '87 Driving Chevys to the Heavenly Highway And some will say It takes a certain attitude To play to pay to play Are you buying this old crock of shame? Don't be fooled by the rules Just be cool, be the mule That's schooled in every permutation That obedience is true emotion If there's one, maybe two Then there is possibly a legion of them Hiding in plain sight Under night lights Should they run, if they bolt There could be consequences For the future conduct of A nation of idiot types, you know? In the moat there's a boat Still afloat in the hope But the goats insist on chewing Through the rope That keeps it moored there So long Tomorrow hasn't happened yet So long But midnight is a nailed-on bet Sweet dreams honey, don't forget The memoirs of a jumped-up diplomat Plundering the natural habitat What would the locals make of that? They're holding candles to The wind of changeability Hoping for a flame to take When they call on the fool To be fooled by the rules You know it's getting closer to The judgement of the chosen few Shut up and obey

OLD WORLD STANDING Old world standing Old world standing all alone I ran so far and fast From everything I cared to know I ran so far and fast From every person in their world Left the whole world standing Whole world standing all alone Hey I'm no-one knowing Hey I'm no-one known I thought so long and deep In everything I cared to do In clouds of rust and dust Above the things I cared for you Left the old world standing all alone The whole world standing all alone

THE LIFE OF PLOUGHMAN JACK He's got one foot on the land The other in the furrow He's got loose change in his hands Wandering down to Burrow He's got one eye on the sky Meanwhile Jack said, he said he'd be there soon But he was side-tracked By a lonely Hunter's Moon So bright, so astounding Up there in the sky That he failed to make it through Big old moon They said hey! Why don't you come back and stay? Hey, you've been gone forty-six days They said don't make out Like there's nothing to see In this market town People talk with their feet People ought to agree But they don't say He took six tons of the stuff Found it in the Dutch barn P.C. Quive got there fast as he could But he was in the wrong farm Oh no, oh no, oh no! Now Jack's got his head in the clouds Feet on the uplands He's been gone for twenty years now The life of a ploughman There's a little village waiting for him

DEAR OLD RIVER Dear old river Won't you take me to the sea I've been drifting I'm just waiting for the breeze In the valley you're the highway You're the only real escape Old man river won't you Just carry me home To roam, to flow, to roam 'Cos I'm only drifting here Hey Mrs Chew you've been comforting me I've walked these ways for so long I could get there in my sleep If I'm lost I'm only leaving I'll come back around 'Cos I know too much To let you down To roam, to flow, to roam 'Cos I'm only drifting here Oh I should know that Nothing flows upstream So take me to the waterside Oh don't you know that? Nothing goes unseen So take me to the other side I'm loving the life I live Dear old river Won't you carry me home Take my bones and place me Where the wild things roam I've been walking through your valley You've been pushing me on But I'll be standing on a hill Looking down one day

Wake Up 03:27
WAKE UP She said: "You're a difficult ship to sink" And I just smiled and poured a drink Ten days in the pit will make you think I'm just passing through this Wake up You've been speaking in your sleep Won't you wake up? You've been sleeping in your dreams Won't you wake up? Don't forget to unwind Or life will pass you by We spent two weeks down by the sea Skimming stones and drinking tea And on the long way back we breathed The wind of change was but a breeze Then she walked the tightrope And I held on the wire Destined for greatness too grand for desire In balance we trust as we stare at the fire Wake up You've been speaking in your sleep Won't you wake up? You've been sleeping in your dreams Won't you wake up? Don't forget to unwind Or life will pass you by If there's one thing left to say Turn the cheek then earn the pay

LOCAL HISTORY I could've been a lengthsman Clearing nettles with my hook Just like old man Isaac In my second-favourite book I could've been a drowner Dropping hatches in the brook Watering the meadow With the jackdaws and the rooks But I was born a townsman And a townsman I will be I was born too late for making Local history I could've been a farmer Casting seeds across the earth Gathering the harvest Before the winter sends its dearth And I could've been the miller Grinding corn to make the bread The river turning grit stones Under hues of sunset red But I was born a townsman And a townsman I will be I was born too late for making Local history All these things I could've been If I'd been somewhere else I'm torn between the real world And the one I couldn't help 'Cos I was born a townsman And a townsman I will be I was born too late for making Local history And I could've met my sweetheart there And raised a family But I was born too late for making Local history

HAD MY TIME AGAIN Before my time Was there a light on? A light on When darkness shone In the brightness The brightness Loneliness and comfort zones Captured in the undertow Then I made it through And I had my time again During my time I switched a light on Switched a light on And I caught in song Lost emotions From the dark side Cornerstones and wayside points Chapters in the limelight And I'd sing to you If I had my time again After my time Please leave a light on Leave a light on 'Cos I might be gone For a while now For a while Epitaphs and photographs Memories you'll never have And I'd search for you If I had my time again Yeah I'd search for you If I had my time again

about

"In October 2023, I decided to write and record music every day for a month, a process which yielded over thirty new tracks. I spent the following months expanding and finishing each of the songs.

I opted to release this particular batch of eleven tunes as The Woodleigh Folk, a musical alter ego concentrating on the more bucolic, pastoral-themed songs."

Written, performed, recorded and mixed by Jason Allen, October 2023 to February 2024. Made in Somerset.
